Clark began
experimenting with artistic concepts early in his career. In 1956 as a charter
member of the original Tenth Street Brata Group, he did a series of paintings
in which painted canvas was intermingled with painted fragments of paper
that overlapped and went beyond the rectangular frame of the canvas. This
was one of the earliest experiments with shaped canvases, which were to become
so important in the work of mainstream artists of the 1960s.
